Macaws are beautiful, brilliantly colored members of the parrot family. The hyacinth macaw, or hyacinthine macaw, is a parrot native to central and eastern South America. With a length of about 100 cm, it is longer than any other species of parrot. The majority of macaws are now endangered in the wild and a few are extinct. The greatest problems threatening the macaw population are the rapid rate of deforestation and illegal trapping for the bird trade.
